Extension to Torsion Spring Conversion in Kitsilano, Vancouver BC
Swap open side-mounted extension springs for an enclosed torsion spring system above the door. NXT converts garage doors in Kitsilano and across Vancouver, with the price confirmed first.
Extension to torsion spring conversion, explained
An extension to torsion spring conversion removes the springs that stretch along each track and replaces them with a torsion spring on a bar above the door. The torsion system lifts the door from the centre, so it tends to run more evenly and keeps the springs in one place instead of along both sides of the garage.
We fit the bar, bearing plates, drums, new lift cables and the correct torsion spring for your door, remove the old extension springs and pulleys, then balance and test the door. If the existing extension springs have just broken, a conversion can be done in place of an extension spring replacement.
Not every door needs it. We look at the headroom above the door, the door weight and its condition, and tell you whether a conversion or a like-for-like repair makes more sense. The price is confirmed before any work starts.
Is a torsion conversion right for your Kitsilano garage?
A conversion suits doors with room above the opening for the spring bar, doors where the extension springs have no safety cables, and garages where people often walk near the tracks. Detached Kitsilano garages behind older homes are common candidates, as their doors often still run side springs.
It may not suit very low ceilings or doors that need other major work. In that case we recommend a straight extension spring replacement with safety cables, or a maintenance visit to check the whole door first.
What changes when a Vancouver garage door moves to torsion springs
The door is lifted from a single bar, so it usually rises more evenly and smoothly. Fewer moving parts run along the tracks, and the spring is easier to see and check on future visits. If the door is used many times a day, we can fit a longer-life spring as part of a high-cycle spring upgrade.
The opener stays the same in most cases, though a better-balanced door puts less load on it; if it struggles afterwards, see garage door opener repair. For older or heritage doors, the Kitsilano garage door repair area page and Kitsilano history have more on the character homes that make up much of the neighbourhood.

Spring conversion questions from Kitsilano
Do I need a conversion when an extension spring breaks?
No. A matched pair of new extension springs with safety cables is a sound repair. A conversion is an option, not a must.
How much headroom does a torsion system need?
It depends on the door and hardware. We measure on site and tell you if it fits.
Will my opener still work?
In most cases, yes. We test the door with the opener after the conversion.
Is a torsion system safer?
The spring is contained on the bar above the door instead of stretching along the tracks. It still holds a lot of energy, so leave adjustments to a technician.
